Roadside Oddities
No matter where you live, I'm sure you can find your share of "personality"
touches along your travels. We're no different up here in Presque Isle
County. Here are some of ours.
|
 Each
July 4th, Tom Moran of Moran Ironworks reveals a new unique sculpture
during the Onaway parade. Here we see Atlas bearing the weight of
the world on his very sturdy shoulders. He was part of the 2006
celebration. Our planet was constructed of scrap metal.
Although he's on display in downtown Onaway, he's been auctioned off for
charity and will take up residence at a Chesterfield Township truck and
auto parts company once its new building is ready. |

Traveling on 638 Hwy., you'll be greeted by
one of the smiling rocks dotting the county. |

Traveling on Ocqueoc Rd., just north of North Allis
Hwy., one of our neighbors gives a nod to the days before priority mail,
with an honorary mailbox mounted at least 15' in the air! |
Another
of Moran's creations is this eagle head. Once located in front of
the courthouse in Onaway, it currently resides outside of the Besser
Museum in Alpena. |
|
In 2005, Tom Moran donated the Torch of Freedom to
Rogers City, where it sits in Lakeside Park, overlooking beautiful Lake
Huron. It's a beautiful addition to the community and is visible
from the top of the Erie St. hill, especially at night when the torch is
lit.
 |
Just
south of Millersburg on Rainy Lake Rd., you'll find nature taking back
this old bus. It no longer provides a ride for human
passengers, but provides shelter for some of our furry and feathered
friends. |

Just west of Millersburg on M 68, the Green Acres
farm has one of the most interesting sets of roadside art in the county.
The farmer's clothes change with the seasons. Come rain, shine,
snow or wind, rides his tractor wishing the passing traveler peace. |
This
metal daisy is another part of the scene set at the Green Acres farm.
There's more, but you'll have to find it to see it for yourself! |
These are just a few of interesting works of art we've come across in our
travels around Presque Isle County up here in the northeast corner of the lower
peninsula of Michigan. If you have pictures and stories you'd like to
share about roadside art and oddities, please
email them so we can include them here!
