Winter ascends on the Ocqueoc. Slowly, her running water cedes to the ice. Even as her waters run swifly, ice inches toward the old mill. She running down to about one lane, here. Can you see the deer prints? Now, you can see them better. There are still a few small breaks in the ice and snow. You can see the outline of where the water would be flowing. The falls cause the oddest winter formations. Here we have what I call "crystal bells." The water has cut these bells out of the ice and snow. During summer, this is a cooling eddy pool. This is what's left. What's growing up out of it on the left? A closer looks shows how the water freezes in a column as it rushes from under the ice into the eddy. It reminds me of a stalagmite or cypress knee. Even though major portions of the river are covered with ice and snow...
taking a ride on your sled down the river, is not recommended.
