Lighthouses
Presque Isle County has three lighthouses drawing seasonal visitors from near and far. The northernmost one is 40 Mile Point. It is located off US 23, about seven miles north of Rogers City. The second and third are the New Presque Isle Light and the Old Presque Isle Light. 1. 40 Mile Point Lighthouse is located about 40 miles southeast of Old Mackinaw Point and 40 miles northwest of Thunder Bay. The entrance is located off Rte. 23 about seven miles north of Rogers City. The main structure is a two-story duplex with a tower in the center. The light was lit for the first time on April 30, 1897 and continues in service to this day.
3. The Old Presque Isle Lighthouse has a tower 30' tall, an 18' base and 4' thick walls. It was lit for the first time on September 23, 1840 and served for more than twenty years before it was determined that a new light should be built because the keeper's house was in extreme disrepair and needed to be razed. It's been a museum for quite some time now, and the spirit of George Parris, its most beloved tour guide, is said to haunt the light! To get to the Presque Isle lights, take US 23 south from Rogers City or north from Alpena, and turn east on 638 Hwy. When the road splits, and take the left fork, staying on 638 Hwy. Continue for approximately 2 miles, and turn north on Grand Lake Road. Continue approximately one mile until you reach the shore of the lake. Continue North for 1/4 mile, and the entrance to the Old Lighthouse park is on the right. Continue north beyond the old light's entrance on Grand Lake Rd. for about 1 1/2 miles and you will see the new light. Be sure to look for the two range lights on your way in to see the lights! |
