Community Theater

Lifestyle

Getting to know the people of Presque Isle County reveals a heritage steeped in farming, wood, and the great inland sea.  However, we also have a budding arts community adding much to the traditional culture of the area.  Artist David Cook owns the Hidden Treasures Art Gallery in Onaway.  Tile artist Tim Pritchard and Hammond Bay Jewelry designer and creator Mary Pritchard own the Domaci Gallery in Rogers City.  Both galleries feature local artists.  Domaci also features different visual artists from around the state and beyond on a nearly monthly basis, with meet the artist receptions a staple of each opening.

Rogers City Theater serves a dual purpose for the community.  First-run films are the mainstay of this large, comfortable setting that is a throw back to moviedom of yore.  With a large stage, it also serves as the venue for the Rogers City Community Theater troupe.  Less than five years old, this troupe is the brainchild of retired lawyer and theater enthusiast, Karl Heidemann.  Who'd think a county of 14,000 people would have such a rich resource as community theater?  There is also a great summer opportunity for students through the Summer Youth Theater Program.  Upcoming productions include "Little Shop of Horrors" during April 2008 and "Alice in Wonderland, Jr." in August.

The Rogers City Band rehearses each spring for an eight week concert series that takes place at the "band shell" located in Lakeside Park on the shore of Lake Huron.  Rogers City sponsors separate concert series at the band shell each summer featuring talent from around the area and the state.

The county is rich in maritime, farm and logging culture, too.  The Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum is located in downtown Rogers City, as is the Presque Isle County Historical Museum.  There are celebrations commemorating the seasonal opening and closing of the 40 Mile Point Lighthouse.  The old and new Presque Isle Lights are a must see, too.  Much of the land is owned by family farmers, and it isn't unusual to see cow crossings.  The area is known for growing red beans and potatoes.  A trip to the Elowsky Mill makes for an interesting little side trip.  Timbering has long been a family affair up here, too.  Major fires at the beginning of the 20th century did much to change not only the landscape, but the population growth of the area.

Each March, the Rogers City Snowmobile Show comes to town.  The city also sponsors a City Wide Garage Sale, Spring Festival, and Downtown Sale Days every June and September.  Each summer, the Presque Isle County Fair takes place in Millersburg, located in the heart of the county.  August brings the week-long Nautical Festival to Rogers City.  The annual Millersburg Homecoming happens over Labor Day with lots of family fun.  The weekend after Labor Day we celebrate one of our biggest crops at the Posen Potato Festival.  Although it isn't technically a festival, each December, Moran Ironworks brings in hot chocolate, doughnuts, a bon fire and Santa for the kids of the Onaway area and beyond.  The day is capped off by a wonderful fireworks display.

Onaway sponsors the July 4th parade.  The Nautical Festival features a parade on the last day of activities.  Millersburg offers a parade for homecoming, and Posen caps off the parade season during the potato festival.

Sports are also a huge part of the culture up here.  School sponsored sports are complemented by countywide baseball and soccer leagues.  Softball and hockey leagues for adults are popular, too.

I don't pretend to know everything about the culture up here.  If you'd like to add something to this page, please email me.
