Eco-Tourism

We're known as the "Sunrise Side" and the "Natural Side" of Michigan.  With Lake Huron to the east, a true karst system underneath, lots of forest, lakes, and rivers, Presque Isle County is the place to be if you enjoy the outdoors.

We offer four-season recreational opportunities.  Snowmobiling, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing possibilities abound during winter.  Rogers City offers an outdoor ice skating rink all season long.  Spring, summer, and autumn offer chances to fish, hunt, and trap, as well as the occasion to hike, bike, ride horseback, inline skate or ORV your way around the county.  We have three harbors for boating on Lake Huron, as well as opportunities to cruise many of our inland lakes.  You can even find a place or two to kayak.  If you have your certification, try scuba diving shipwrecks preserved by Lake Huron's cold, fresh water.  Some of these activities will probably take you to one of our state parks or recreation areas.

Observing nature, especially bird watching is a favorite pastime for residents and visitors, alike.  Migratory birds (both summer and winter) bring an ever changing clientele at the feeders and out in the field.  Year round feathered residents are a welcome sight on cold winter mornings.  We also have our share of predatory birds, including a variety of hawks and the bald eagle.  Large tracts of our Lake Huron shoreline is publicly owned which allows free and accessible viewing for residents and visitors.

If you want to see the Milky Way and more stars than you could ever count, you can bring your binoculars or telescope.  However, there's a lot to offer the naked-eye astronomer up here.  Summer nights are short, but if you are a night owl, you'll find plenty to see, including some awesome meteor showers.  Winter star gazing is the best, if you can stand the cold.  Maybe you'll even see the aurora borealis!

There's nothing like spending a night out under the stars, camping next to a lake or river during summer, be we also offer a variety of places to stay "camp Holiday Inn style," including bed & breakfast and motel accommodations.  If you'd rather motor your way, we have many scenic routes to enjoy.  Many of our back roads are not suitable for motorcycles because they are not paved.  Be aware that any road with the name "highway" after it will most likely be dirt, gravel, or a two-tracker.  If you are adventurous, take a good map (or gps) and enjoy the scenery.  Early autumn is a great time to get lost in our foliage.  While you're out there, check out our roadside oddities, too!

To get started, here are a few places of interest.

Black Mountain Recreation Area | Ocqueoc Falls & Bicentennial Pathway | Ocqueoc Falls Campground | Ocqueoc Underground
